I have been trying to obtain shapefiles of the mining concessions to use in conservation planning in Western Tanzania (part of the Albertine Rift region) – basically looking at where you need to conserve outside protected areas and avoiding mining concessions. I have mining maps from Uganda, Rwanda, DRC but Tanzania is the big hole in the rift. The concessions have been mapped but when I write to the office in Dar I fail to get any response. Our office in Tanzania also tried to find the office responsible and failed. Would you have a contact there that could help me?  Andy      From: TZGISUG [mailto:tzgisug-bounces at lists.habari.co.tz] On Behalf Of Howard Frederick via TZGISUG

Subject: Re: [TZGISUG] what3words  Great project, Mark - and thanks for the link to Missing Maps, hadn't realised that existed.   On 3 October 2015 at 15:05, Mark Iliffe via TZGISUG <tzgisug at lists.habari.co.tz> wrote:Hi All,  Just to introduce myself, I'm Mark Iliffe the supervisor for the Ramani Huria project at the World Bank, thank you all for the kind words! Just to bring to your attention the Missing Maps tasks for Dar: http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/1083, while maps are never complete, hopefully we'll have the most complete map of Dar and anyone can help contribute to this.   We've been focusing on flood resilience features such as drains, building footprints and roads, but have been collecting other features too. We're looking at releasing new datasets soon, such as drainage maps through http://ramanihuria.org otherwise it's all on OSM.org and will keep everyone updated through this list.

Great article Howard.

What is most interesting is that it now explains why the OpenStreetMap of Dar was changing daily, square by square, with huge new areas being mapped at building level.
Even better I now know they are using up-to-date drone generated air photos through the World Bank Dar Ramani Huria Project, and not the older Bing satellite imagery - a fantastic ongoing effort by the project team in Dar.

Regards,
Mike

Interesting article on georeferencing (with Tanzania as an example) using a ‘universal’ simplified grid: http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2015/sep/22/tanzania-smartphone-apps-africa-fastest-growing-city-dar-es-salaam-map    what3words (iOS / Android) provides a 3-word code for every 9m² square on Earth. From their website:
The world is poorly addressed. This is frustrating and costly in developed nations; and in developing nations this is life-threatening and growth limiting.  what3words is a unique combination of just 3 words that identifies a 3mx3m square, anywhere on the planet.  It’s far more accurate than a postal address and it’s much easier to remember, use and share than a set of coordinates.  Better addressing improves customer experience, delivers business efficiencies, drives growth and helps the social & economic development of countries.
