That's right,

Just the data in a spreadsheet (pain stakingly as I had to photocopy every page and then scan it one by one). I did digitize the map of Tanzania in the 1960s with all the villages points as per the definition of the time (not sure what the definition was, but it does not match well with the villages in 1978 which are defined as centres with 250 families or more).

You mentioned having the pdf for village data for 2012. I am trying to map the population of approximately 80 towns/ cities over the past 30 years. It would be very helpful if you are able to share the file.

I hope to put all of my resources online over the next month or two, together with data sets I have created using night lights and other satellite images.

I assume by 'digitised' you means just the data in a spreadsheet and not the GIS village boundaries ?

Haruna,

A Population Census for Tanzania was conducted in 1967, 1978, 1988, 2002 and 2012.
Any figures for your required dates of 1982 and 1992 will be intercensal estimates based on population growth prediction.

The NBS website has some national level data (age; sex) for 1967, 1978 and 1988 on the file http://www.nbs.go.tz/takwimu/references/1967popcensus.pdf downloadable from their Census website page<http://www.nbs.go.tz/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=57&Itemid=122>.  Note: the links for 1967, 1978 and 1978 all point to the same Pdf link above but all dates are represented in this file despite the name.

Some 1988 Census data including urban areas can be found online here :

You might find this article of interest from 2011 from the NBS Manager of Social and Demographic Statistics.  It indicates that any detailed figures before 1990 are only available in printed format not digital:
