I wanted to mention that Esri partnered with the US Dept. of Interior / USGS to host and serve global mosaics of Landsat imagery at no cost a few years back. At the time of the launch (2011) this represented 20 different dynamic, multispectral, multitemporal image services based on more than 8 TB of imagery, however this service has grown substantially since then. Esri image services provide full access to the spectral and temporal information in the raw imagery supporting change detection and some analysis and above all they provide very fast access and viewing of the datasets.

To use Landsat via the Esri cloud platform "ArcGIS Online" (at no cost) visit the following website: http://www.arcgis.com/home/ and type in "Landsat" to the search box in the upper right corner. Clicking on the thumbnail of the service you are interested in will open the maps, whereas clicking on the title will tell you more about the services. Here is an example of what you are looking for (this may show up as an attachment depending on your email settings).

Note that you can create a free "Personal Use" account for ArcGIS Online to save and share (email, tweet, facebook) the maps you create. You can also upload shapefiles and CSV files to the maps and add in other map services via open standards. Here are a few web courses that provide an overview as to what is possible.

Authoring Web Maps Using ArcGIS Online (self-paced Web course)

Making and Sharing Maps with ArcGIS Online (60 minute Web based presentation)

There are also paid subscriptions for ArcGIS Online which allows organizations to use the platform with full control over users and security but that is not required for personal use. If you are a nonprofit organization and need to update your Desktop Software to the current version please apply for our nonprofit program at http://www.esri.com/nonprofit or drop me a note with any questions.

The latest Landsat will build on past
missions. The USGS recently retired
Landsat 5, which operated since 1984 and
has returned 2 1/2 million images.
