Subject: [LCA] LCA related PhD positions in Ireland

There are a number of LCA related PhD positions available with UCD Dublin
and Teagasc (Ireland) at the moment, funded by national government research
grants. Projects include:

(1) *Life cycle modelling of greenhouse gas emissions and carbon
footprint of dairy and beef production systems*. This is part of a larger
project addressing the development, validation and application of models
capable of quantifying, benchmarking and identifying strategies to increase
the environmental efficiency (reduce the environmental footprint) of the
agri-food sector through the development of a life cycle analysis which can
be implemented into a quality assurance scheme for ruminant production
systems in Ireland. This PhD project is part of a large team spread over
multiple institutes in Ireland. (4 years funding)

(2) *System modelling and life cycle assessment of dairy production on
heavy, wet soils in Ireland*
This study will use system simulation modelling (Dairy_sim) and LCA
modelling to evaluate the impact of artificial drainage of heavy wet soils
on the productivity and environmental impacts of dairy farms. Alternative
land use scenarios will be examined. Impacts will be considered using
carbon footprint, water footprint, energy footprint, eutrophication
potential, gross margins and life cycle costing. This project is part of a
moderate team made up of Teagasc, UCD and TCD. (4 years funding)

(3) *Developing decision support algorithms using LCA and LCC for smart
integrated livestock farming*
This study will be part of a EU ICT-Agri Network project on smart
integrated livestock farming. The overall project will demonstrate the
possibilities, explore the boundaries and requirements, and identify future
developments for ICT-supported smart farming systems (sensing and decision
support systems) for dairy production. The PhD will focus on adapting LCA
and LCC tools for a cloud based farm ICT system. This project is part of a
team made up of partners from Ireland, Denmark, Belgium, Finland and
Greece. (3 years funding)

If you are interested please contact me to discuss further and i will
provide details on how to apply and shortlisting criteria.

Please feel free to circulate this email to anyone who may be interested in
applying.

PLEASE NOTE, IF YOU ARE NOT AN EU CITIZEN YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY HALF FEES
YOURSELF TO REGISTER AS A PHD STUDENT. IF YOU KNOW YOU CANNOT DO THIS,
PLEASE DO NOT APPLY.
