I prefer Jabber/XMPP
Free, open source. It is a distributed system. Anybody can run his own
jabber server. The communication can be end to end encrypted using the
OTR/PGP extension.

For really confidential information email OpenPGP or S/MIME encrypted
using a key length of 2048 Bits or more is the first choice.
