Many admins use within their network a not existing TLD like .home
.office .inside .localdomain and so on.
Since years the ICANN is complaining about this practice [1].
Best practice is to use a subdomain of your anyway (?) existing domain.
For testing and docmentation the four TLDs .test .example .invalid and
.localhost are reserved (rfc2606). How to handle this domains in your
DNS is described in rfc6761.
With the introduction of about 1000 new TLD the risk internal network
now colliding with an real existing TLD is much higher. And the number
will increase even more.
To stop this practice the ICANN released some guides how to migrate to a
official namespace. [2]
If you are using such an "private" TLD you should migrate asap to avoid
connectivity problems.
