The Vision
The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is a $500 million, global initiative to educate and develop next-generation leaders who will be equipped and empowered to lead change in their home communities, particularly in Africa.

Over the next 10 years, the Program will enable 15,000 bright young people who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to complete their secondary and university education in institutions in Africa and around the world. Throughout their learning experience, the Program will offer Scholars financial, academic, and social support to ensure their transition to further education or to employment.

The Model
The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program identifies academically talented young people who have demonstrated a commitment to serve their communities, yet face significant barriers to education. The Program is uniquely designed to provide Scholars with holistic support, including:

·         Comprehensive scholarship (school fees, living expenses, books, stipends, transportation)
·         Academic curricula relevant to growth sectors in Scholars’ home countries
·         Mentoring and counseling, including academic and social support
·         Service and experiential learning (volunteerism, internships, social entrepreneurship)
·         Training in skills critical to employment success
·         Career counseling and connection to jobs in Scholars’ home countries

The program also fosters leadership development and includes membership to a Scholars Community. It encourages Scholars to apply their education toward the betterment of their home communities.
